Recent events in our world have primed your average Jane and John to become more involved than usual. Whether you think of the US elections, Standing Rock or the Syrian refugees, people all over the world are taking a stand for their brothers and sisters. These challenging times have stirred the humanitarian thread that lives within us all.
Our final topic of Doorway 11 is Humanitarianism. Whether you think of yourself as a humanitarian or not, you probably have ideas about what it means to be a humanitarian.
Cambridge Dictionary defines humanitarian as one who is involved in or connected with improving people’s lives and reducing suffering.
This means that we don’t have to be donating large sums of money to a humanitarian cause to think of ourselves in those terms. Humanitarianism is the willingness to extend yourself for those less fortunate, in a way that makes life easier for them.
Some people have a real gift and desire to act in ways that benefit others. Doing so makes them feel connected to the bigger picture that reminds us we are all in this together. For others, the idea of humanitarianism is a foreign concept or perhaps feels too abstract. They prefer contributing in ways that feel more personal.
