Day 10: Shift Your Mental Attitude

Your mental attitude plays a major role in the world you experience. It is the filter through which you perceive and respond to the world around you. It stands to serve that it impacts the way that you communicate. In some circumstances, your mental attitude says more than words ever could.

The Free Dictionary states . . .

Mental Attitude is a complex mental state involving beliefs, feelings, values and a disposition to act in certain ways.

Once you realize that the world around you shifts, as your beliefs, feelings, and values shift, you’ll understand that the world is a flexible reality. Things aren’t as fixed as they appear to be. As you shift, the world shifts with you. This gives you a lot more power in creating the world you envision.

I remember being a teenager and my dad telling me, it wasn’t so much what I was saying but the way I was saying it, that was going to get me in trouble. There was a lot of turmoil in my family during those years and I was in the throes of puberty and all the internal chaos the hormonal upsurge created. I remember being upset and angry a lot of the time, and it showed. Though I thought of myself as a happy person, my attitude had turned dark.

I thought it would all change, and I’d be fine, once I was out in the world on my own. It turns out changing one’s attitude doesn’t happen overnight. My self-doubt and the mental dark cloud of my teenaged years stayed with me until I finally realized I was the only one who could change it.

Changing your mental attitude requires the discipline to catch yourself when you notice that you are approaching your life as though everything is working against you, and begin to realize that the opposite is actually true. However, the only way to experience positivity is by being positive!

Find a Reason To Be Happy

The swiftest way to shift your attitude is by actively looking for the good in everything. Even the things we don’t like. Even the things that are painful or ugly or bring us to our knees.

Many years ago, there was a Unity minister who had a 6:30 AM radio program. I was a runner, in those days, and always ran with my Walkman and headphones. So every weekday morning before work, I listened to Reverend Maureen do her short, inspiring talks, as I ran. One morning her topic was a tragedy that had happened in her church. She said,

We’re going to call this good. Not because we are happy it happened or think it is a good thing. We call it good so that good can come of it. And when it does, we will recognize it.

I knew she was right. Life works in mysterious ways, and if you look back at some of the things you thought were terrible at the time, you can see that event as a turning point for something wonderful that could never have happened otherwise.

Some people seem to have been born with a sunny disposition and life smiles on them. Mental attitude is a dynamic for most people, though. The trick with attitude is to notice when life seems too heavy and consciously lighten up. You may not be able to immediately change the situation, but changing your attitude toward it will feel better and allow you to see the wisest course forward.

A Deeper Perspective

The Goddess of Now reminds you to get out of your head and into your body, into your heart, into this Now moment, any time you feel stressed or distressed. She reminds you to breathe a little deeper and offer compassion to yourself. She says that as you spend time connecting with the wise part of yourself that is always available, you become more mentally resilient.

The Goddess encourages you to trust yourself knowing that cultivating a positive mindset and attitude makes you less vulnerable, and more capable of rising to any occasion with dignity and grace.

Take a nice deep breath and close your eyes on the exhale. Relax your shoulders and open your chest. Notice the flow of your breath as it runs up and down your spinal column.

Inhale (pull the energy of the earth through your feet and out your crown)  and Exhale (pull the energy of the cosmos down your crown through your feet. Do this 3 times. On the last inhale pull from the earth and the cosmos, exhale out your heart and up over the earth blanketing it in the perfection of now. Take a few more easy breaths then open your eyes and pick up your pen.[/thrive_custom_box]
